SHADE TREE COMMISSION
In early 2009, a Shade Tree Commission was formed to help keep Brooklawn a beautiful, quaint and friendly town. Ordinance #9-09, Borough Article II adding, Tree Protection to Chapter 119 Shade Tree Commission in the code of the Borough of Brooklawn has been adopted on July 20, 2009.
This ordinance regulates the protection of trees in the tree protection zone. Tree Protection Zone is identified as any publicly owned or publicly maintained property, sidewalk portion of the street right-of-way, utility easement or parking areas.
Please be aware that all persons must obtain the approval to remove or relocate any tree within the protection zone. In addition to removing and relocating trees, planting of trees in the street right-of-way required approval from the Shade Tree Commission.
As part of the New Jersey Shade Tree Foundation, the Borough will be seeking funds through grants and various programs.

COME IN BEFORE YOU CUT! Trees and Shrubbery on Borough Property are now protected by law. To avoid fines and violations, you must have prior permission before you prune and remove a tree on public property. The first step is to fill out a tree permit to be considered for approval at the next monthly meeting of the Brooklawn Shade Tree Commission (STC).
If you are granted Premission to remove a tree on public property, you must also be prepared to replace the tree with an appropriate tree for the location. A list of appropriate trees will be provided to you should you be approved.
The permit is free to fill out and is available at Borough Hall. Please help us to protect and manage Brooklawn's community forest. Examples of public property include: The grassy strip between sidewalk and street; public easements; parks; playgrounds, etc.
